"symptoms of life" - WILLOW
Released March 12, 2024
A newie but a goodie. WILLOW is just upping her game with every release. This is certainly an artist we can’t get enough of and this song just goes to show how incredible WILLOW is as a musician. Her indie side is prevalent in this one, but so is her adventurous side, venturing into odd meters and incorporating an acoustic piano part that makes the verses fit like a perfect puzzle between the choruses. Also, listen to that bass tone. Are you fucking with me?
"Inaka" - Mei Semones
Released March 7, 2024
Brooklyn-based jazz influenced indie J-pop singer-songwriter and guitarist Mei Semones sounds stunning on this latest release (that was a mouthful). She manages to strike the perfect balance of Berklee jazz kid and indie pop girl…while also sprinkling in strings, meter switches, and Japanese lyrics. While at Berklee, I met Mei briefly in the lobby of 150 (though she probably does not remember) and found her to be extremely humble and somewhat reserved. It’s incredible to hear her heart and soul on this track and we will most certainly be tuning in to her upcoming EP Kabutomushi, out on April 5th!
"Mando" - Will Paquin
Released February 22, 2024
Indie artist alert! We don’t yet know much about Will Paquin, except that when you google him, a picture of Zayn Malik pops up…? This guy is interesting. Okay, Will, you got us…we’re listening! This song is so beautiful and simple, but the sonic choices really bring it to a whole other level. Those staticky drums give a certain crunch that feels just right. If you’ve ever wanted to feel like you’re in a coming-of-age indie film, listen to this. Roll credits.
"Right Back to It" - Waxahatchee, MJ Lenderman
Released January 9, 2024
This may be one of the only times you’ll see a country song on this list. This one is so deserving though. If you asked my boyfriend, I’ve definitely played this ad nauseam. But you know what? I’m not done yet! Waxahatchee and MJ Lenderman’s voices fit gorgeously together on this track. If you’re sick of the city, bored in your room, walking through the halls at school or work, this song will instantly transport you to the countryside. Strap on your cowboy boots and bring bug spray.
"Corner" - Mike Kota
Released November 13, 2023
Fucking lush - Two words that describe this masterpiece by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mike Kota. Not all songs need to be over 5 minutes, but boy are we glad this one is! The torture and constant push forward both in the lyrics and the music reflects the complicated feelings a lot of us experience as anxious twenty-somethings. Maybe that’s just me? If it’s you too, give this one a listen.
"Love & Death, Pt. 2" - Azekel, Ebo Taylor
Released March 17, 2023
Nigerian-born singer-songwriter Azekal teams up with legendary Ghanaian guitarist and composer Ebo Taylor on this electric track. A fusion of R&B vocals, African and Cuban rhythms and instrumentation is a perfect recipe for groove and soul. The lyrics are simple yet meaningful, a short story of love and death. Are we a year late discovering this gem? Yes. Are we still loving it? Yes.
