“.. YOU, A FOOL” - Saya Gray
Released March 28, 2024
Let it be known, we love Saya Gray in this house! Mind your neck because the first track off QWERTY II, sequel to the 2023 QWERTY EP, is bound to give you whiplash from the inevitable headbanging that proceeds. She’s weird, and we like that, okay? I imagine Saya Gray’s music feels similar to how it would feel to be an insect in a video game. Does that make sense? Try it out.
“This is Nowhere” - The Black Keys
Released March 8, 2024
Okay, let’s be honest, were we following The Black Keys, waiting for this album with bated breath? No, sorry. But we can say with absolute certainty that the first track off the band’s twelfth album, Ohio Players, is one we’ll be returning to. And this truly isn’t a diss against The Black Keys…we just haven’t been paying attention. Well, my ears have perked up. We love this song the same way we love an after-pool sandwich. It just feels right. Oh and in case you didn’t know, writing credits on this song include the eclectic and mother-loving Beck. No shit we’re spinning it!
“trespass coat” - Niko B, dexter in the newsagent
Released March 7, 2024
I need you all to be real with me. Is British rap-singing really becoming more a part of the U.S. zeitgeist? Or is my algorithm feeding me dope shit and it should become my sole purpose to put my fellow yankees on? I’ll do it, I’ll put you on. You wanna feel cool? You wanna giggle? Give this one a listen. Don’t worry, I still drive on the right side of the road and call it soccer.
“Salivate" - Sir Chloe
Released May 19, 2023
Alright we’re a year late to this one, I know I know. And you know what? I’m gonna say something and some of you may not like it. But I don’t care and you probably shouldn’t care that much either. We saw Sir Chloe live at the Troubadour last weekend (we were there for the opener, more on that in a coming article), and I’ll be honest…it felt sterile. Go ahead, boo and throw your tomatoes. I’m not mad at the music, and I am not even mad at the artistry (though I would argue that feels a little manicured for “indie”). My issue is this: if I’m going to hear guitar distortion and sludgy songs, I want it to feel raw and kinda thrown together. It doesn’t need to be perfectly rehearsed and your drummer shouldn’t be playing to a click, just saying. I’ll leave it at that. We obviously still like the music. This song’s dope and you should check it out.
“Wet Paint" - Deki Alem
Released March 11, 2022
Deki Alem makes it on Ruckus House on Aux two weeks in a row! What can we say? When it’s good, it’s good. This song, off the duo’s two-track single Razor/Wet Paint is perhaps the soundtrack to a drunken, drug-fueled night out. The simple track is under two minutes and feels like a fever dream, but somehow leaves you craving more. Have you ever felt like someone is too cool? Not like too cool for school. But like out your league cool. That’s how we feel about Deki Alem.
