Preface: My Discover Weekly and Release Radar this week were ASS…sooooo this week’s Ruckus House on Aux is a collection of some live sets we’ve been playing on repeat and a new single from our friend Tahj Keeton! By the way, pics are linked!

“BETTER TIME" - Tahj Keeton

Released April 27, 2024

It’s about time we tell you about our friend Tahj Keeton (that’s his real name)! The Atlanta based alternative rapper released a double single over the weekend on the LOW. His first release of the year teases what is sure to be his best album yet. The upcoming project, Celebrity Jesus, is still in the works but take it from us, you’ll want to be following along to make sure you don’t miss this one. This is future music people! Sometimes psychedelic, artsy and chaotic, filthy, and always hard as fuck. “american crack/better time” is available to listen to on the [untitled] app with the code “dontforgetme.” Go check it out or else stay living in the past, blegh!

Mk.gee Live @ The Fonda

April 25, 2024

If you haven’t already gotten your tickets to see Mk.gee on tour, RUN don’t walk to buy yours now. I’m not kidding when I say this show was genuinely life-changing. Obviously Two Star & The Dream Police is an incredible album as is, but nothing can compare to listening to these songs live. This whole set has been on repeat in my mind, and if you were there you know why. Talk about talent. Mk.gee is all music and no gimmick which is extremely rare these days. This show was a breath of fresh fucking air, kinda like how it feels to come up to breathe when you’ve been underwater. BUT at the same time, it felt like you were fully immersed in the ocean letting the oxygen run over your fish gills. Every once in a while you run into an artist that stands apart from the rest. Mk.gee seems to strike the perfect balance in his music of light and dark, mysterious yet inviting, futuristic but nostalgic at the same time. His live show, lit by two spotlights, was intimate. I don’t often feel delusional enough to think an artist is singing directly to me, but I feel as though my brain chemistry quite literally changed on this night and everyone else in the room faded away (all love to my boyfriend). You know when you make love and it’s so tender it could make you cry? Yeah this was like that. With the ongoing turmoil in our world,  I needed to be reminded that music making is still alive and well. And yes, I mean music MAKING. Not creating noises, not designing sound, but actually making music. I could go on and on about the surprise appearance by Mk.gee’s longtime collaborator Dijon (fucking insane), the new unreleased song, the DISCO BALL?? You get the point. It was magical and 50 years from now I’ll wonder if it was real or just a dream. Either way I will never forget this show. If you weren’t there I feel sorry for you. Kidding but not really. Go listen to Two Star & The Dream Police and don’t show this review to my boyfriend.

Robert Glasper Black Radio III Live @ The Vermont ft. BJ the Chicago Kidd, Vic Mensa, DSmoke, etc

March 18, 2023

This album has been on repeat for quite some time, but it wasn’t until this week we discovered this live performance of Black Radio III live at the Vermont in Hollywood. That’s a little misleading…it is only three songs but shit, we’ll take what we can get. Even though we weren’t in the room, the chemistry between Glasper, Derrick Hodge, and Chris Dave is undeniable. It doesn’t matter if you have no rhythm. You WILL recognize that pocket. When we talk about playing tight, that’s what we mean. Please, for the love of good music, give it a listen.

“By Fire,” Live Alive on Fuse TV - Hiatus Kaiyote

May 9, 2016

I think this may be Hiatus Kaiyote’s first appearance on Ruckus House on Aux, and that’s close to criminal but rest assured this will not be the last time we talk about them. Listening to their music will make you dance, tap your toes, and scratch your head all at the same time. And seeing them perform live will remind you that their songs were actually crafted by these superhuman minds, not by God. “By Fire” is a personal favorite off their 2015 album  Choose Your Weapon and this live performance lives up to the insanity of the record itself. One thing you can sense from the crowd is their appreciation for these outstanding musicians. It’s an intimate performance and one that we can now enjoy for eternity thanks to the internet.

Kaytranada Boiler Room Montreal DJ Set

December 18, 2013

You don’t know the definition of iconic until you’ve come across Kaytranada’s Boiler Room Montreal DJ Set from 2013. Aside from being groovy as hell, it’s a case study into the complexity and weirdness of human behavior. It’s also a reminder that clubs should stay dimly lit. Besides that, the music speaks for itself. It is the perfect pre-funk video to put on before you head out on the town, but also the perfect video to put on if you want to stay in and have a good time.
