Did you miss us? Last week we took a break from Ruckus House on Aux for Mother’s Day (word to your mothers). Rest assured though we will catch you up on all the good music we’ve been spinning lately.
“360” - Charli XCX
Released May 10, 2024
Okay I’m going to start by saying this song is dumb…but that doesn’t mean I don’t like it. If you enjoy this song unironically, that’s cool too but maybe you’re a little dumb. And that’s okay! This song is for the hotties, the dummies, and the hot dummies. And I KNOW this music video would have totally changed my brain chemistry if I had seen it in middle school. Unfortunately, I think my prefrontal cortex is already fully developed. Anyway, Rachel Sennott is iconic. “A little more slutty baby maybe?” Losing brain cells as we speak.
“Why Did I Laugh Anyway” - Dev Lemons
Released May 10, 2024
Vibe switch! Earnest Dev Lemons is quite impressive on this one. Comparing her in QUEEF JERKY with this track really goes to show her versatility as a musician. The verses are the real superstar on this song, but the choruses echo a heart wrenching message that demonstrates Miss iPad’s humanity. She’s not just a quirky internet personality; she’s also an honest emotional artist. We are loving it.
“Take A Bite” - beabadoobee
Released May 9, 2024
This one goes down like a crisp glass of cold water, refreshing. We can’t decide what’s most exciting about this track. Is it the fact that it’s the first single of beabadoobee’s upcoming LP This is How Tomorrow Moves? Is it that Rick Rubin is credited as a producer? Or is it that beabadoobee seems to be stepping into a new, vulnerable and impressive era as a songwriter? We are clearly loving this song and excited to hear more on her third studio LP which comes out August 16.
“hi grace” - Dominic Fike
Released May 3, 2024
Man oh man…Dominic Fike…he makes some good songs. I’ll be honest though, every time I see him in a live performance setting he kinda puts me off. There’s an air of arrogance to him but don’t let that detract from the music. This is a beautiful song, my favorite off the impromptu 14 minutes which Fike released at a surprise release event last month. Despite his hubris, the guy’s been through a lot. His honest songwriting and sense of longing are what draw us in, and that’s all we can ask for from any artist.
“Like I Say (I runaway)” - Nilüfer Yanya
Released April 24, 2024
This is the first we’ve heard of British singer/songwriter Nilüfer Yanya and what a first impression! This song is delicious (as Kris Jenner would say). It’s also Yanya’s first release under Ninja Tune, a label that boasts artists like Thundercat and Hiatus Kaiyote. “Like I Say (I runaway)” is a guitar-heavy thunderous track that’s full of soul and embodies Yanya’s mercurial energy. Give it a listen if you’ve ever considered running away.
“Stacy’s Chips” - Lexa Gates
Released April 12, 2024
If Meg Thee Stallion is real hot girl shit, Lexa Gates is real cool girl shit (not that she’s the complete opposite of Meg, but that she’s cool as fuck). Gates is a true born and bred New Yorker which is evident from her lyrical delivery. Her flow is full of swag, and I’m talking Biggie swag, not JB swag. In an era where female rappers are ruling the game, standing out as Lexa Gates does is impressive to say the least. The up-and-coming artist is signed to GoodTalk, a label founded by Jonny Shipes who is credited with discovering artists like Nipsey Hussle, Joey Bada$$, and Sean Kingston to name a few. I certainly see similar success for Lexa Gates.
“How Can I Love Her More?” - The Lemon Twigs
Released April 9, 2024
The Lemon Twigs finally make it on Ruckus House on Aux. I’m certainly a fan of the brother duo, though that’s all I’m willing to learn about them given their Spotify bio is obscenely long. Obviously influenced by the Beach Boys and the Beatles, The Lemon Twigs are always infusing a heavy dose of 60s/70s songwriting in their music. Some artists that embody anachronistic songwriting tendencies come off kitschy, but something about these guys really makes you believe they must have stepped out of a time machine. Perhaps they were born in the wrong century or maybe they’re vampires. Either way, I’m a fan.
“back to him” - Amelia Moore
Released April 5, 2024
The song is Timbaland approved - enough said! In all seriousness, this is an earworm. It’s undeniably the best song off Amelia Moore’s EP, he’s just not that into you! We did see all the TikToks though and that shit is annoying. But hey, how can I blame her? This track is ripe for the TikTok picking. This brings up an important topic though. Has TikTok ruined artistry? Obviously this isn’t a new conversation. I’ve just been thinking lately about artists who turn their whole careers into becoming social media influencers. I guess it works for some?? For me personally, it puts me off. Anyway, that’s a whole separate issue that we won’t get into here. The song is fun and that’s it!
